Check Before You Burn! Updated at 2 PM
Seconds can make the difference between life and death in an emergency. Civic numbers make it easier for firefighters, paramedics, and police to find you as quickly as possible when trouble strikes. The lack of clearly posted civic numbers is one of the most significant contributors to delays in emergency response, yet it is also one of the cheapest and easiest issues to fix.
To ensure emergency responders can find your home day or night, follow these provincial standards:
Orientation: Do not use vertical numbering. Numbers should be horizontal.
Height: Post the sign at least 1.2 meters (48 inches) above the ground (measured from the bottom of the number).
Visibility: Ensure the sign is visible from both directions of traffic flow.
Distance: Sign posts should be within 5 meters (15 feet) of the road.
Color: Use reflective white numbers on a reflective blue background.
Obstructions: Keep the sign clear of shrubs, snow banks, and other visual obstructions.
